Major General Babagana Monguno (Rtd.), CFR
National Security Adviser to the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria
2015 – 2023
In honour of a life of discipline, loyalty and quiet strength.
Where It Began
Chapter One
Every life of consequence begins somewhere quiet. Babagana Monguno was born in 1957 in Borno State, in the north-east of Nigeria — a beginning far from the corridors of power he would one day keep.
He was educated at King’s College, Lagos, where the habits of a disciplined life — order, duty, attention to detail — were first formed. The roots of a soldier’s bearing are planted early, long before the first uniform.
The Cadet
Chapter Two
He trained at the Nigerian Defence Academy as a cadet of the 21st Regular Course, and was commissioned into the Nigerian Army.
The Academy asks its cadets for everything — their comfort, their certainty, their sleep — and returns, in exchange, a way of standing in the world. What is forged there is not merely skill but character: the quiet assumption that a duty accepted is a duty discharged.
It is the making of an officer, and of a man who would later be trusted with the security of a nation.
The Guard
Chapter Three
From 2007 to 2009, he served as Commander of the Brigade of Guards — the unit responsible for guarding the seat of government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
It is a command measured not in campaigns but in constancy. Every morning the state is guarded; every change of sentry is perfect; nothing is ever allowed to happen. Behind that stillness stands a discipline few ever see, and fewer still are trusted to command.
The Intelligence Chief
Chapter Four
From 2009 to 2011, he served as Chief of Defence Intelligence, heading military intelligence for Nigeria’s Armed Forces.
Intelligence is the silent service: its successes are never announced and its work is never done in daylight. To lead it requires a particular temperament — patience, discretion, and the ability to see clearly what others only sense.
He would later retire from the Nigerian Army as a Major General, closing a soldier’s career of more than three decades — though not, as it proved, a life of service.
The Adviser
Chapter Five · 2015–2023
On 13 July 2015, President Muhammadu Buhari appointed General Monguno as National Security Adviser to the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
He would hold the office until 2023 — eight years at the centre of the nation’s security, through seasons that asked everything of the man who held it. It is an office without spectacle: its successes are the crises quietly contained, the dangers that never arrive, the meetings that end with a country safer than they began.
